Everyone knows how important it is to stay healthy and
fit in life. However, we wondered what elderly people do to stay fit and how
important it is to them.
Even though many of the people, mostly grandparents,
we asked have had injuries and illnesses affecting their health, we were
surprised to hear that nearly all of them do sports and other activities to
improve their health.
Some of our grandparents are or have been extremely
sporty. Skiing, playing volleyball, doing yoga and hiking are just some of the many activities
preferably done by our grandparents. Unfortunately, attaining a greater age,
these types of sports are too dangerous or too exhausting for them.
Nevertheless, light activities like riding their bikes,
walking, swimming or water gymnastics can be done every day. But it is best to
be active with other people, this motivates and many sports clubs offer team
sports specifically for elderly people as we found out.
Also, working in the garden and being outside in fresh
air keeps fit, they tell us.
Yet, keeping fit is not only about doing sports.
Eating healthy is part of it and, most importantly, keeping your mind active.
Crossword puzzles or reading for example help a lot.
Staying healthy enables our grandparents to still play
a part in our life, visit us, their grandchildren and also, being independent
makes them incredibly happy. It is great for them to see what they can still
do.
Still, often they have to force themselves to actually
do something.
They advise everyone to do at least some exercises for
the joints to stay flexible.
If in doubt whether the exercises are good or bad for
the health or if they don’t know what is best for them, they can always consult
a doctor. Sometimes going to your personal limit is not only satisfying but
also fun!
